Somerset
Famous for its cider, Somerset is an area of beautiful, rural scenery, which includes three areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty – the Mendip, Quantock and Blackdown Hills together with Exmoor National Park. Famous sites include Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge in the Mendips and Dunkery beacon on Exmoor.
Somerset is also home to a number of myths and legends, the most famous of which centre around Glastonbury, where the Tor is said to be the mythical Isle of Avalon. If you climb Glastonbury Tor you can see the remains of the 14th Century St Michaels Church and enjoy views of the Mendips, Quantocks and Wells and, if you’re lucky, part of Wales.
With such beautiful scenery, walking, cycling and horse riding are all naturally very popular. For anyone looking for an adrenaline rush, there is abseiling and caving at Cheddar Gorge, sailing and windsurfing at Wimbleball Lake, jet skiing at Burnham-on-Sea and some of the country’s best mountain biking trails in the Quantock Hills.
There are many opportunities to spot wildlife along the coastline, where many parts are owned and protected by the National Trust while on Exmoor there are herds of Exmoor ponies, and wild red deer.
